2017 marks the 100th Anniversary of the United States involvement in World War I. In recognition of
this significant anniversary, the Gaston County Museum of Art & History presents World War I Hometown Heroes. Opening May 21st, the exhibition celebrates the Gaston County men and women who contributed to the war effort at home and abroad. Visitors will “see” war first-hand through the stories, letters, photographs, and objects of several men who bravely fought in the Great War: Raymond Floyd Bumgardner, Robert Gregg Cherry, Benjamin F. Dixon, James W. Holland, Jesse Lockaby, Roy Martin, William Newton Wilson, James Alston, Lawrence Pasour, and Grady Lawrence Friday.
In addition, Hometown Heroes highlights service organizations, such as the YMCA and Red Cross, which supported the troops overseas and the families at home. The exhibition includes hands-on stations, children activities, and the WWI history based computer game Valiant Heart. Drawn primarily from the collection of the Museum, Hometown Heroes features objects never before on view from private lenders as well as significant loans from the Kings Mountain Historical Museum, American Military Museum of Gastonia, and Crowders Mountain State Park.
