Loray Talks: Southern Industrialization in the Carolinas

Dr. Shep McKinley, History professor at UNC Charlotte, will present “Southern Industrialization in the Carolinas: The Case of Lowcountry South Carolina in the New South.” Preservation North Carolina’s Alfred C. Kessell History Center and the Gaston County Museum of Art & History are partnering for a riveting presentation from Dr. McKinley that includes a general discussion of southern industrialization in the Carolinas, including Gastonia’s own Loray Mill, and ends with the South Carolina lowcountry to discuss Dr. McKinley’s recent book, "Stinking Stones and Rocks of Gold: Phosphate, Fertilizer, and Industrialization in Postbellum South Carolina" (2014). Dr. McKinley’s Stinking Stones and Rocks of Gold was the winner of the 2014 George C. Rogers Jr. Book Award (South Carolina Historical Society, best book of South Carolina history). He is also the co-author of "North Carolina: New Directions for an Old Land" (2006), and the co-editor of "North Carolina During the First World War, 1914-1922" (forthcoming 2018).
